Description
In a third part written mostly in triple time, No. 8 stands out by moving in 2/4. It is an intermediate A-minor piece from Traditioner af Swenska Folk-Dansar, about 56 seconds long with 360 notes, in a collection that gives Swedish folk dances a piano form without naming their composers.
It is in A minor and 2/4. A triple-time dance swings on the weight of the first beat and the flow of the other two, whereas in duple time strong and weak beats simply alternate, so the step is plainer and more direct. The range runs from A2 to G5, and the left hand supports the accompaniment from low on the tonic A.
Noticing the different metre is the key to this piece's character. Listen first at normal speed and feel how it differs from the triple-time pieces. When playing, lower the playback speed and focus on separating strong and weak beats; repeating phrase by phrase with the A-B loop evens out the shape of the melody. Checking how the left hand marks the beat through the hand colours also helps. It fits on a 61-key keyboard. Once it is secure, playing it next to a triple-time piece is good practice for feeling the switch of metre.
