Description
Constant motion is the point of No. 3, an A minor dance in which the notes hardly ever pause and the spring of triple time comes through strongly. It is part of the first book of Traditioner af Swenska Folk-Dansar, a Swedish collection that appeared in the early nineteenth century as notations, with piano parts, of melodies that had circulated orally. This tune's own source is not identified.
It is in A minor and 3/4, lasts about 51 seconds and has 466 notes, moving busily at around nine notes per second. After the F major of No. 2 it returns to a minor key, and the energy of a triple-time dance comes through clearly. The range spans exactly three octaves, from A2 up to A5, so every note fits on a 61-key keyboard.
It is rated intermediate. With constant activity, the challenge is steadiness - keeping the tempo intact all the way through. To avoid rushing the quick spots, first practise at a slower playback speed while checking the beat, and repeat the hard passages with the A-B loop. Checking each hand's part with the hand colours makes it easier to keep track of the beat amid the quick movement. Played after Nos. 1 and 2, it also shows the changes of key and character across the set.
A broad collection of standalone piano pieces not belonging to any specific set, offering hundreds of varied character pieces to explore and compare.
