Description
A left hand that sets one bass note or chord on each beat, ranging down to A1, supports a right hand of eighth notes and double stops in this small A minor dance of about thirty seconds. It is No. 20 of the first part of Traditioner af Swenska Folk-Dansar. Published in Sweden in the early nineteenth century, the three-part collection records traditional tunes by unknown makers for keyboard players.
The key is A minor and the metre 3/4. The left hand is entirely in quarter notes, placing a bass note or chord on each beat, and goes down as far as A1. The right hand moves mainly in eighth notes, adding two-note double stops to thicken the melody. The simplicity of the left hand and the activity of the right are clearly separated.
It is rated beginner, with 188 notes. With the left-hand rhythm constant, attention can go to the right-hand eighths and double stops. The left hand does, however, range widely in the bass, so its positions need checking as you play. Note that the lowest A1 lies below a 61-key keyboard (C2 to C7), so on one, play with an octave shift. Check the left-hand leaps at a slower playback speed and use the hand colours to keep the two roles in view.
