Description
Reaching down to A1 in the left hand while the right hand fills out its tune with double stops, No. 13 is a bright G major dance of about thirty seconds. It comes from the first part of Traditioner af Swenska Folk-Dansar, a Swedish folk dance collection of the early nineteenth century. Its three parts set traditional dance tunes, whose makers are unknown, for the keyboard.
In G major and 3/4. The right hand moves mainly in eighth notes, and in many places it sounds two notes at once in double stops, which gives the melody body. The left hand marks the beat in quarter and eighth notes and reaches down to A1. The right hand is busy while the left supports it simply: a clear division of roles.
It is rated intermediate, with 220 notes in 30 seconds. The main challenge is sounding the right-hand double stops evenly, with both fingers together. The left-hand A1 lies below a 61-key keyboard (C2 to C7), but shifting the whole piece by an octave brings every note onto such an instrument. Slow the playback and look at how the double stops line up in the hand colours before you begin practising.
