Description
The fourth prelude of Book I carries a subdued, melancholic character in C-sharp minor. Five voices interweave over a gentle, siciliana-like pulse, allowing long-breathed melodic lines to unfold. Though rated intermediate, it calls for a keen ear to balance several independent voices at once.
Bach's collection of preludes and fugues for keyboard, covering all 24 keys and regarded as the summit of contrapuntal writing.
