Description
This is one of the few five-voice fugues in the entire Well-Tempered Clavier, carrying the weighty sonority of C-sharp minor. The added voices bring considerable complexity, as a solemn, sorrowful subject builds slowly across the texture. At 246 seconds and 1,290 notes, it is regarded as one of the more substantial advanced works in the collection.
