A solo piano arrangement of the song "On the River," originally written for tenor, horn, and piano. A wave-like accompaniment evokes a boat drifting on the current, carrying a melody of departure and heartfelt farewell. Running nearly eight minutes with an extremely dense roughly 7,093 notes, it demands both lyrical sensitivity and stamina from advanced players, and much of the interpretive interest lies in how a single piano recreates the original dialogue between tenor and horn.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
