Description
Schubert's Moments musicaux, D. 780, is a set of six miniatures written between 1823 and 1828 and published as Op. 94 in the year of his death. The third was originally issued separately under the title "Air russe," and it is still occasionally known by that name.
In F minor and duple time, the left hand marks an unchanging accompaniment figure while a dotted-rhythm melody springs lightly above it. The tread stays light despite the minor key, producing a character in which sorrow and charm sit together. Over a thousand notes fill about two minutes — a fairly dense texture.
The task is keeping the lift of the dotted rhythm constant to the end. Let the dots soften and the dance disappears; over-sharpen them and the song does. Keep the left-hand accompaniment light and short and let only the right hand sing. Since the melody returns many times, deciding to vary the dynamics and character at each repetition is what carries the piece through.

Franz Schubert was a Vienna-born composer who died at only 31 but left behind a vast body of work, especially in the field of Lieder. Known for his gift for melody and subtle modulation, songs such as "Erlkonig" remain widely performed today. His piano works, including the Impromptus, are equally rich in lyricism.
