Description
This is No. 1 in C minor from the set of four Impromptus, Op. 90, composed in 1827 during Schubert's late period. A powerful, march-like theme contrasts strikingly with a lyrical middle section in E-flat major. Running nearly nine and a half minutes with roughly 4,995 notes, it requires strong structural sense to vary tone color and dynamics across its recurring theme; this is a large-scale advanced piece where sustaining concentration across its considerable length is essential, and the challenge lies in giving the returning theme a fresh expression each time.
