Description
"Ungarische Melodie" D.817 was composed in 1824 and reflects the Hungarian-style music fashionable in Vienna at the time, marked by dotted rhythms and an exotic, folk-inflected melody. Running about two and a half minutes with roughly 1,451 notes, it calls for a light touch that brings out the bounce of its dotted figures. It coincides with Schubert's trip to Hungary that same year and is often associated with impressions from that journey; an intermediate-level piece, its character is largely defined by the crispness of those dotted rhythms.
