Description
The first movement of Sonata No. 27 is notable as one of the first works in which Beethoven used German rather than Italian tempo markings, here 'Mit Lebhaftigkeit' ('with liveliness'). Passionate motion alternates with more wistful passages, reflecting the deepening inwardness of his transition toward the late period across a note-dense span of over four and a half minutes.
