Description
This is the middle movement of Sonata No. 6, an Allegretto. The sonata has no slow movement, and this one stands where a minuet would. It moves at a more restrained tempo than its neighbors, allowing a singing melody to unfold with care.
It is in F minor and 3/4 time. In the main section, a minor-shaded melodic line set against gentle accompaniment quietly deepens the emotional character. The middle section moves to D-flat major, where the chords open out into a softer sound that sets off the shadows of the main section. It lasts under three minutes with 1,233 notes, and its range from A-flat 1 to F6 reaches well into the bass.
Rated intermediate, its brevity of under three minutes leaves little room to hide a lack of nuance in shaping the melody. Watch the balance between the hands so that the accompaniment never covers the tune. Use the hand colours to see which hand carries the melody, and repeat the boundary between the main and middle sections with the A-B loop to get a feel for changing colour as the music moves from minor to major.
