Description
This is the finale of Sonata No. 25. Its theme incorporates a figure said to imitate a cuckoo's call, and this motif is said to be the source of the whole sonata's popular nickname, "Cuckoo." It closes the small three-movement sonata in a bright, compact span.
It is a Vivace in G major and 2/4 time. Set at a brisk tempo, it keeps a playful, bright mood throughout. An approachable theme keeps returning, and the contrast with the passages in between gives the movement its variety. It lasts under two minutes yet holds 1,268 notes, more than twelve per second, and its range from G1 to G6 fits on a 76-key keyboard.
Rated intermediate, it packs a surprising number of notes into its short span and requires lightness to be maintained at speed. Trying to play fast tends to harden the tone, so begin at a reduced playback speed and learn the theme's bouncing rhythm while checking it with the hand colours. Repeating the theme with the A-B loop until the lightness feels natural, and only then playing straight through, is a good approach.
Piano sonatas representative of the Classical and Romantic eras, including Beethoven's early works — substantial multi-movement pieces throughout.
