Description
The first movement of Sonata No. 17, known as the Tempest, opens unusually by alternating fragments of a slow Largo with bursts of Allegro before settling into restless figuration and unstable harmony. Sustaining dramatic tension across its considerable length of over six minutes makes this a compelling and demanding movement.
