The Sarabande from Partita No.1 packs 504 notes into a brief 47 seconds, giving it a noticeably denser texture than the suite's other movements. Rather than leaning heavily on the dance's traditional second-beat emphasis, it favors richly ornamented melodic lines that call for careful, expressive shaping.
Suite-form works from the Baroque era; Bach's Partitas, a sequence of varied dances, are ranked among the greatest keyboard works.
