K.440 is written in the same B-flat major as its neighbor K.439, and the two are generally regarded as a paired set. This sonata moves with a slightly lighter step, combining a leaping melodic line with a rhythmically active accompaniment. Played alongside its companion, it reveals the contrasts Scarlatti liked to build even within a single movement.

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757)
Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples and spent the latter part of his life at the Spanish and Portuguese courts. Born in the same year as Bach and Handel, he is renowned for his 555 single-movement keyboard sonatas, notable for their bold leaps and incorporation of Spanish dance idioms.
