Description
Light and flowing, in A minor and 6/8: the right hand touches a neighbouring note a semitone away before springing up through a broken chord. The left hand plays an eighth-note accompaniment taking chord tones in turn, such as A, C and E, which gives the sway of 6/8. In the MIDI data the second half of its 32 bars turns to A major, ending brightly. It lasts about 43 seconds, with 463 notes.
Within Czerny's 50 Melodious Studies, Op. 840, it shares the minor-to-major design of Nos. 3 and 4, here moving from A minor to A major.
In this beginner study, semitone steps and broken-chord leaps alternate in the right hand, so learning the changes of hand position first makes it steadier. Feel each bar of 6/8 as two large beats and keep the left-hand accompaniment light. Slow the playback to pick out the semitone movement, and use the hand colours to check what each hand is doing as you practise. The range runs from E2 to B6, which fits a 61-key keyboard.

About the Composer
Carl Czerny (1791-1857)
Carl Czerny was a Viennese pianist and composer who studied under Beethoven and later taught Franz Liszt. He is best known for his enormous output of piano etudes, which remain widely used in piano pedagogy around the world today. This site includes selections from the 160 Eight-Measure Exercises, Op. 821, and the 50 Progressive Studies in All Keys, Op. 840.
