Description
In E minor and 4/4, the right hand opens the piece by climbing an octave from E in sixteenth notes on a melodic minor scale with C-sharp and D-sharp, and goes on to play scales and double thirds. The left hand keeps up an accompaniment of chords in eighth notes. For the second half of its 32 bars the key signature changes to four sharps for E major, ending brightly.
With 600 notes it has the most of Nos. 1–10 of Czerny's 50 Melodious Studies, Op. 840, on this site, and it lasts about 64 seconds. The collection has 50 pieces, so No. 10 still belongs to the first half; here the keynote moves to E.
Its rating is beginner, but note that a minor scale may use different notes going up and coming down, so check the accidentals in the score view before playing and you will not hesitate. The eighth-note chords in the left hand tend to get heavy where the same chord is struck several times, so keep the wrist loose and the touch light. Slow the playback to check the scales, and use an A-B loop to compare the minor first half with the major second half. The range runs from E2 to G#6, which fits a 61-key keyboard.

Carl Czerny (1791-1857)
Carl Czerny was a Viennese pianist and composer who studied under Beethoven and later taught Franz Liszt. He is best known for his enormous output of piano etudes, which remain widely used in piano pedagogy around the world today. This site includes selections from the 160 Eight-Measure Exercises, Op. 821, and the 50 Progressive Studies in All Keys, Op. 840.
