Description
At its core are repeated sixths in the right hand, such as E-flat with C, struck in eighth notes, marking out the harmony within the short metre of 3/8 in C minor. The left hand supports the downbeats with bass notes and chord tones. For the last 16 of its 48 bars the key signature disappears for C major, so the piece ends brightly. It lasts about 56 seconds, with 410 notes.
In Czerny's Op. 840, No. 1 moved from C major to C minor; this piece does the opposite. The collection's idea of pairing the major and minor modes on one keynote returns, facing the other way.
For this beginner study, striking sixths at an even strength means keeping the hand shape steady while the wrist stays loose. When the upper note carries the melody, playing the top finger slightly deeper lets the singing line stand out. Find where minor turns to major in the score view, and slow the playback to listen to the change in colour. The range runs from G2 to G6, which fits a 61-key keyboard.

Carl Czerny (1791-1857)
Carl Czerny was a Viennese pianist and composer who studied under Beethoven and later taught Franz Liszt. He is best known for his enormous output of piano etudes, which remain widely used in piano pedagogy around the world today. This site includes selections from the 160 Eight-Measure Exercises, Op. 821, and the 50 Progressive Studies in All Keys, Op. 840.
