Description
A long-breathed right-hand melody in quarter and half notes sings unhurriedly in 3/4 through this G minor study, with few leaps and a demand for smooth connection from note to note. For the second half, 32 bars, the key signature changes to one sharp for G major, while the left hand keeps up bass notes and chords marking the beat in quarter notes. It has 567 notes.
At 64 bars it has the most bars of Nos. 1–10 of Czerny's 50 Melodious Studies, Op. 840, on this site, and at about 69 seconds it is also the longest.
Rated beginner, it has little fast motion; instead the task is holding long notes and joining them legato to the next. Listen to each half note right to its end before moving on, and the melody will not break. As the piece is fairly long, use an A-B loop to practise the minor first half and the major second half separately, and check where the key signature changes in the score view. The range is wide, from D2 to D7, so a 61-key keyboard lacks the highest notes.

Carl Czerny (1791-1857)
Carl Czerny was a Viennese pianist and composer who studied under Beethoven and later taught Franz Liszt. He is best known for his enormous output of piano etudes, which remain widely used in piano pedagogy around the world today. This site includes selections from the 160 Eight-Measure Exercises, Op. 821, and the 50 Progressive Studies in All Keys, Op. 840.
