Description
A melody decorated with short grace-note-like ornaments sings over the gentle two-beat sway of 6/8 in this study. The score opens in F major, and in the second half of its 32 bars the key signature changes to two flats, ending in B-flat major. The left hand supports it with an accompaniment that combines eighth and quarter notes, playing chord tones in turn. It lasts about 50 seconds, with 498 notes.
Czerny's 50 Melodious Studies, Op. 840, carry the subtitle "progressive exercises in all the major and minor keys," and the collection changes key from piece to piece while growing gradually harder. No. 2, near its start, is a song.
It is a beginner piece; feel each bar of 6/8 as two large beats and the melody flows naturally. Play the right-hand ornaments quickly on the beat, without delaying the main note. Slow the playback to hear how the ornaments fit in, and use the hand colours to check that the left-hand accompaniment stays quieter than the melody. The range runs from F2 to D7, so a 61-key keyboard lacks the top note.
A set of melodious studies by Czerny covering all 24 keys, valued as a way to develop technique and musicality at the same time.
