Description
Light leaps never stop: in 2/4, eighth-note figures skip over notes to trace the shape of chords in the right hand. The score opens in G major, and for the last 24 bars the key signature changes to two flats for G minor. The left hand supports it with chords and bass notes in eighth and quarter notes. It lasts about 48 seconds, with 496 notes.
It runs to 56 bars. Among Nos. 1–10 of Op. 840 on this site it follows the major-to-minor design of Nos. 1, 5 and 8, now with G as the keynote, typical of how Czerny moves step by step through the keys in this collection.
A beginner study: leaps in the right hand become easier once the hand knows in advance where the next note lies. It is also practice in finding positions by the feel of the hand's span rather than staring at the keys. Slow the playback to check where each leap lands, and look in the score view for the point where major turns to minor. In the minor second half, notice how similar figures take on a darker colour, and the playing will gain expression. The range runs from F#2 to A6, which fits a 61-key keyboard.

About the Composer
Carl Czerny (1791-1857)
Carl Czerny was a Viennese pianist and composer who studied under Beethoven and later taught Franz Liszt. He is best known for his enormous output of piano etudes, which remain widely used in piano pedagogy around the world today. This site includes selections from the 160 Eight-Measure Exercises, Op. 821, and the 50 Progressive Studies in All Keys, Op. 840.
