Description

This Largo brings Act II of La Traviata to a close. Immediately after Alfredo has humiliated Violetta in public, his father Germont appears and sternly rebukes his son. Alfredo's remorse, the crushed Violetta's plea, the Baron's challenge and the condemnation of the onlookers pile up into a large ensemble as the curtain falls.

The file gives E-flat major in 4/4. At a slow tempo, several voices sing different feelings at once in ensemble writing, and in the piano version chords and melodies are layered one on another. Its 2,927 notes in about four and a half minutes make it the densest piece in this group after No. 4, the Stretta dell'introduzione. The range from B-flat 1 to B-flat 6 spans 61 keys, but no octave shift fits it on the C2 to C7 of a 61-key keyboard.

It is rated advanced, and the challenge is letting the main melody be heard through thick chords. Because the tempo is slow, each chord's sound is exposed, and any imbalance in volume muddies it at once. Use the hand colours to find where the melody lies, separate the layered voices by ear at a reduced playback speed, and then shape the whole towards its large climax.
