Description

This continues the Act II finale of La Traviata after the entertainment choruses. Alfredo arrives and starts gambling, and Violetta enters with Baron Douphol. Through a game of cards between Alfredo and the Baron, and a confrontation when Violetta and Alfredo are left alone, the scene moves towards the decisive moment when Alfredo calls the guests together and humiliates Violetta in front of them.

In the gambling scene a restless figure repeats in the accompaniment while tense dialogue runs above it. The music carries the action forward rather than gathering into set songs, and its expression changes from moment to moment. In this file it is on a large scale, about nineteen minutes and 5,538 notes, and its range runs from F1, the lowest note in this group of pieces, to A-flat 6, so it does not fit a 61-key keyboard.

It is rated intermediate: individual passages are manageable, but sustaining the tension over this length is the challenge. The repeated accompaniment figure easily turns mechanical, so it needs gradual changes of volume and colour as the scene builds. Practise it section by section with the A-B loop, and follow the dialogue against the accompaniment in the score view to keep the long span in order.
