Description
Composed in 1806, this is one of Beethoven's best-known variation sets. Using an original theme rather than a borrowed melody, it unfolds thirty-two tightly connected variations of contrasting character over a repeating bass reminiscent of a Baroque passacaglia. The work is admired for the dramatic scope it draws from such a compact theme.
