Based on Vincenzo Righini's aria 'Venni Amore', this variation set is counted among Beethoven's earliest works, written during his Bonn years. Its unusually large scale of twenty-four variations already reveals the young composer's enthusiasm for the variation form, transforming a simple theme into a wide range of expressive characters.
