This E-flat major theme is known as one of the last musical ideas Schumann ever set down, dating from 1854 during a period of severe mental crisis. The melody later became well known through Brahms's Variations, Op. 23, which are based on it. Simple and song-like on the surface, it carries a quiet gravity that reflects the circumstances of Schumann's final years.
