Description
This set of six impromptus was inspired by Middle Eastern poetry as translated by Friedrich Rückert, reflecting the Romantic fascination with exotic, faraway lands. Schumann renders this imagery through characteristically rich harmony and refined pianistic detail. Bringing out the distinct mood of each piece is key to conveying its narrative, picture-like quality. Composed in 1848, the set runs about eighteen minutes and contains nearly 12,000 notes, demanding the sustained concentration expected at an advanced level.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
