Description
Waldszenen ("Forest Scenes") is a set of nine pieces reflecting the German Romantic fascination with the forest as a symbol of mystery and nature. Its most famous movement, "Vogel als Prophet" (Bird as Prophet), imitates fantastical birdsong with striking imagination. The set as a whole favors approachable melodies and vivid pictorial writing, showcasing Schumann's poetic side. Composed in 1849, it runs about twenty-one minutes with over 10,600 notes, testing an advanced player's ability to capture the distinct atmosphere of each of its nine scenes.
