Description
Alongside the Gymnopédies, the Gnossiennes are among Satie's best-known works, and this is the first. Written without time signature or barlines, it creates a mysterious, timeless atmosphere. Idiosyncratic performance directions such as "very luminously" leave the interpreter considerable freedom, and it is technically undemanding enough for beginners.

Erik Satie (1866-1925)
Erik Satie was a French composer from Honfleur who worked in Montmartre's cabarets while pursuing a highly individual musical aesthetic. Known for spare, understated music and whimsically titled works, he later influenced minimalist and ambient music. This site includes 65 of his works, such as pieces from "Descriptions automatiques" and "Danse maigre."
