Description
Composed in 1825 and published as Op.42, this A minor sonata was the first piano sonata Schubert saw published during his lifetime. Unlike his earlier minor-key sonata, it shows the structural solidity and emotional depth of his mature style, alternating dramatic tension with lyrical repose. Approaching thirty-five minutes and over twenty thousand notes, it is a substantial work demanding sustained concentration from advanced pianists.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Franz Schubert was a Vienna-born composer who died at only 31 but left behind a vast body of work, especially in the field of Lieder. Known for his gift for melody and subtle modulation, songs such as "Erlkonig" remain widely performed today. His piano works, including the Impromptus, are equally rich in lyricism.
