Description
The right hand's figure is a turn-like ornament in thirty-second notes, F, G, F, E, F, circling quickly around one note before leaping to an eighth-note chord tone. The metre is 3/8, the key B-flat major. The left hand mostly marks the beat with eighth-note chords, taking short thirty-second figures here and there. The two hands have about the same number of notes. It lasts about 13 seconds, with 179 notes.
It is written in the short metre of 3/8, and the score sets it out as sixteen bars of 3/8. It brings the B-flat major group of Op. 821 to a close.
Rated beginner, it rewards a close touch: turn figures come out even when the fingers stay close to the keys and move quickly without lifting high. The speed of the ornament easily pulls the beat out of shape, so give priority to feeling the downbeat of each 3/8 bar. Carl Czerny (1791-1857)
Carl Czerny was a Viennese pianist and composer who studied under Beethoven and later taught Franz Liszt. He is best known for his enormous output of piano etudes, which remain widely used in piano pedagogy around the world today. This site includes selections from the 160 Eight-Measure Exercises, Op. 821, and the 50 Progressive Studies in All Keys, Op. 840.
