This is the opening movement of The Art of Fugue, a straightforward four-voice fugue in D minor in which the subject is introduced successively in each voice. It serves as the starting point for the increasingly elaborate canons and fugues that follow. Without relying on virtuosic display, it lets the beauty of the subject itself carry the music, making clear voicing between the parts essential.
