Description
In this D major minuet in 3/4 the right-hand melody leads while the left marks the beat in the bass, and the right hand has more than twice as many notes. The minuet, a triple-time dance favoured at the French court, was a staple of the Baroque suite. This one stands on its own in the second half of the Aylesford Pieces, before the second pair of minuets.
It lasts about a minute and has around 280 notes, a calm density of just over four per second. It shares key and metre with another D major piece in the set, Menuet II (Trio), so comparing the two shows differences in the writing.
It is rated intermediate. The technical demands are modest, but it needs a dance feel, with weight on the first beat and lighter second and third beats. Use the hand colours to check where the left-hand bass lies, and slow the playback a little to shape the melody. The range runs from A1 to A5, and only the lowest note, A1, falls outside a 61-key keyboard as written, though an octave shift fits every note.
