This collection pairs Landler with ecossaises, and its subtitle Wiener Damen, or Viennese Ladies, evokes the elegant ballroom scenes of contemporary Viennese society. Warm triple-time dances alternate with brisker duple-time ones across its roughly seven-minute span. Composed in 1822, the set packs over 4800 notes and sits within the waltz tradition of Schubert's dance music. At an advanced level, it calls for a steady dance pulse even as the mood shifts from piece to piece.

About the Composer
Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Franz Schubert was a Vienna-born composer who died at only 31 but left behind a vast body of work, especially in the field of Lieder. Known for his gift for melody and subtle modulation, songs such as "Erlkonig" remain widely performed today. His piano works, including the Impromptus, are equally rich in lyricism.
