Sharing its tonic with the C major invention, this C minor piece has a more introspective, shadowed character than its companion. Its writing is dense, with a short motif passed continuously between the voices, demanding steady concentration to keep the flow even between the hands. Among Bach's pedagogical inventions for his son, this one feels notably demanding.
