Description
A minuet Mozart is thought to have written before his sixth birthday, among the earliest of his works to survive. It was entered, in his father Leopold's hand, into the notebook kept for his sister Nannerl. Several small dances from the same period sit alongside it, and together they show directly what the child composer was absorbing.
In F major and triple time, the melody is made from scales and broken chords over harmony built mainly on the primary triads. There are only around 130 notes, no ornaments and no contrapuntal devices: it traces the dance pattern of its day plainly and faithfully.
There is nothing technically difficult in it, and a beginner can read it through in a day. With so few notes, the length and weight of each one becomes the expression. Put the weight on the first beat and change the character between repeats. It is a rare case of historical interest and genuine playability in the same piece.
A broad collection of standalone piano pieces not belonging to any specific set, offering hundreds of varied character pieces to explore and compare.
