No. 5 from Songs Without Words, Op. 53, titled "Volkslied" (Folk Song). Built on a simple, folk-like melody, it nonetheless features a busy accompaniment with fine figuration, combining straightforward character with technical demands. It condenses German Romantic lyricism into about two and a half minutes. The contrast between its rustic melody and intricate accompaniment is part of its charm.
