Completed in 1835, this large-scale sonata was published under Schumann's alter egos Florestan and Eusebius with a dedication 'to Clara.' It moves from a fantastical, restless opening movement through a song-like slow movement and a characterful scherzo to a passionate finale, running nearly half an hour in total. Its poetic, improvisatory writing demands both stamina and expressive depth from an advanced pianist.
