Description
Composed between 1838 and 1839, Op.40 pairs two contrasting polonaises. The first, bright and march-like, is popularly nicknamed the "Military" polonaise, while the second turns dark and elegiac. This striking contrast between the two pieces has made the set one of the most beloved among Chopin's polonaises.

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)
Frederic Chopin was born in Poland and made his career in Paris, remaining unusual among great composers for writing almost exclusively for piano. He poured his longing for his homeland into mazurkas and polonaises, while his ballades and etudes combine poetic melody with harmonic innovation.
