Originally conceived as material for a planned third piano concerto, Chopin later reworked it into a brilliant solo showpiece. It alternates orchestral, tutti-like passages with lyrical, singing lines in a display of concerto-style drama compressed onto a single instrument. Running about twelve minutes with over nine thousand notes, its dense chords and rapid passagework demand real stamina, making it a substantial test for advanced pianists.

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)
Frederic Chopin was born in Poland and made his career in Paris, remaining unusual among great composers for writing almost exclusively for piano. He poured his longing for his homeland into mazurkas and polonaises, while his ballades and etudes combine poetic melody with harmonic innovation.
