Description
This Andante was originally written as the slow movement of the "Waldstein" Sonata, but Beethoven removed it and published it separately to keep the sonata from becoming too long. Its lyrical, song-like theme unfolds through variation-like treatment, showing the expansive lyricism typical of his middle period. At about nine minutes, it calls for an advanced player able to bring out its singing melodic line.
