Description
This is the fantasy movement of a masterpiece believed to have been composed during Bach's Köthen period (around 1717-1723). It opens with fierce, toccata-like runs, moves through arpeggiated passages, and arrives at a recitative-like section, unfolding in an improvisatory and dramatic structure. Advanced in level with a substantial length and note count, it demands expressive command of bold chromatic writing and its free, speech-like gestures.
