Prélude Op.31 No.2

Description

This is the second prelude from Alkan's Op. 31 set. In contrast to its companion, which is over in about 44 seconds, it takes its time to unfold a meditative soundscape. Only the second piece in the collection, it already shows a completely different character from the first.

A sustained bass line underpins a quiet melody, creating an introspective, prayer-like atmosphere typical of Romantic keyboard writing. It lasts about five minutes with 846 notes, fewer than three notes per second, a notably unhurried density. The range runs from F1 to F5 and extends well into the bass, so a 61-key keyboard does not reach its lowest notes as written, though an octave shift fits every note.

Though rated intermediate, its longer duration demands sustained concentration on tone decay and pacing. With so few notes, each one rings for a long time, and the melody above must stay clear while the bass is held. Repeating a single phrase with the A-B loop and checking how far the melody can sing while the bass sounds is a good way to find the piece's breathing.
