Description
Published in 1837, this is one of Schumann's most celebrated variation sets, based on a theme by the amateur composer Baron von Fricken, father of his then-fiancee Ernestine. Rather than simple theme-and-variation writing, each etude takes on the character of an independent piece, making it one of the most demanding works in the Romantic piano repertoire. At over thirty minutes, it also requires sustained concentration across its full span.
