These variations relate to the genesis of Schumann's celebrated Symphonic Etudes, Op.13, representing music that did not make it into the final published version. Built on the same underlying theme, they take the material in different directions than the familiar set. Comparing them with the finished Op.13 offers insight into Schumann's compositional process.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
