Built over a gently rocking bass ostinato in D-flat major, this lullaby layers increasingly delicate ornamentation above a repeating foundation. Nearly the entire piece stays at a hushed dynamic, so its real difficulty lies in voicing and touch rather than volume. At about four minutes and roughly 1,760 notes, it rewards advanced pianists who can shape filigree passagework with quiet control.

About the Composer
Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)
