Description

Composed alongside its F minor companion in 1894 for Richard Muhlfeld, this second sonata is warmer and more song-like, set in E-flat major. Its finale unfolds as a set of variations, transforming the theme with the settled craftsmanship typical of Brahms's late style. Heard here as the piano part alone, it still invites the listener to imagine the original chamber dialogue with the clarinet.

Sonatas across a range of instrumentations, including piano parts from violin sonatas, spanning Classical to Romantic styles.
