Composed in 1839 as Schumann was preparing to marry Clara Wieck, this piece favors lyrical song over technical display. Its gentle C major melody returns in rondo-like fashion, interrupted by more passionate minor-key episodes. It offers a good study in phrasing and singing tone for players at an advanced level.
