Description
Dating from around 1810, when Schubert was about thirteen, this fantasia is counted among his earliest surviving compositions, as its D.1 catalog number suggests. Simpler in scope than his later fantasias, it nonetheless shows glimpses of the melodic charm that would define his mature style.
Piano works with a free, improvisatory character, ranging from Bach to Chopin and Beethoven, each shaped by imaginative, fantasy-like ideas.

Franz Schubert was a Vienna-born composer who died at only 31 but left behind a vast body of work, especially in the field of Lieder. Known for his gift for melody and subtle modulation, songs such as "Erlkonig" remain widely performed today. His piano works, including the Impromptus, are equally rich in lyricism.
